Fighting for Democracy
Fourth Universalist believes the practice of democracy is sacred within our denomination, congregation and society. We are committed to protecting and strengthening our democratic system in the US.
Democracy justice work is more important than ever to counteract the erosion of our democratic and constitutional rights. Our actions include protesting in rallies in NYC against the loss of these rights for anyone and requesting elected officials to take a stand against anti-voter legislation.
We also aid historically disenfranchised voters to build a democracy that prioritizes the voices of all people. Since 2020, Fourth Universalist has partnered with the Center for Common Ground, a non-partisan Black and women led voting rights organization that educates and empowers voters of color in voter suppression states.
We support their Reclaim Our Vote campaign, a grassroots mobilization to increase BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) voter turnout. These results are accomplished via phone-banking and the exceedingly popular postcarding.
Here is a link to the documentary that spurred this action, “Suppressed: The Fight to Vote.”
So far, we have sent over 165,000 handwritten postcards.
Volunteers write postcards from home as well as during “Postcard Parties” live at Fourth Universalist – a great way to meet fellow justice-minded people. We have collaborated with other congregations at these gatherings such as All Souls NYC, St Bart’s Church, and NY Society for Ethical Culture. For these campaigns, we also work closely with local Reclaim Our Vote partners in NYC
