Changemakers at 4th U

Join us for Changemakers at 4thU, a four week, in person Sunday series in October that builds organizing skills and community connection ahead of the midterms – hosted by Rev. Sara Green. Each 90 minute session stands alone, so come to one or all four. Topics include one-on-one relationship building, story circles, democratic decision making, and nonviolent direct-action training. Pizza and childcare will be provided.
Details about each session are included below:
Session 1 (October 4, 12:30 – 2pm): The One-on-One Meeting and Building Relational Power
The one-on-one meeting is the cornerstone of effective organizing. This workshop teaches participants how to use 1:1 meetings to establish, maintain, and grow relationships within their organizing work. Participants will learn the four key components of every 1:1: establishing a clear purpose, exploring a person’s story and values through probing questions, exchanging resources and insights, and securing a concrete commitment to action. The session covers three types of 1:1s: recruitment, maintenance, and escalation and provides practice in making a “hard ask”- a concise, specific ask that results in a clear commitment.
.
Session 2 (October 11, 12:30 – 2pm): Story Circles and Amplifying Community Voice
Story circles are a powerful tool for community dialogue and collective meaning-making. In this workshop, participants learn to facilitate small-group story circles where each person receives full attention to share a personal story on a generative theme. The session covers facilitation techniques, including setting guidelines, timing, and using silence, and teaches participants to guide post-story reflection to identify common themes and shared values. By practicing deep listening and spontaneous storytelling, participants build empathy and uncover the collective narratives that can drive movement building.
.
Session 3 (October 18, 12:30 – 2pm): People’s Movement Assembly and Democratic Decision-Making
The People’s Movement Assembly (PMA) is a methodology for building community power through radical democratic, participatory spaces that trust the collective voice of people in struggle. This workshop introduces the PMA framework, including its political principles, organizing phases (before, during, and after), and facilitation tools. Participants will practice small-group facilitation, synthesis processes, and moving from commitments to action. The session emphasizes how assemblies have been used by social movements globally to advance people power and self-determination.
.
Session 4 (October 25, 12:30 – 2pm): Nonviolent Direct Action Training and Turning Power into Action
Direct action is a form of protest in which participants seek to achieve goals through direct, often physical, action rather than through negotiation. This workshop trains participants in planning and carrying out nonviolent direct actions from sit-ins and strikes to occupations and blockades. The session covers power analysis, strategic targeting, action logistics, legal considerations, and de-escalation. Participants will learn that direct action interrupts business-as-usual, seizes leadership, and introduces an alternative narrative, building the power necessary to win change.
