Justice and Activism
Fighting for a just, equitable, and sustainable world.
Fourth Universalist has a long tradition of activism, which includes experience as a Sanctuary Congregation and leading a powerful Black Lives Matter Vigil and “Lie In.” During these rapidly changing times in our country, our congregation continues to assess where our justice work is needed the most.
As Unitarian Universalists, our belief in the inherent worth and dignity of all, motivates us to strive for equity and justice; especially for those who have been historically marginalized.
Our Justice Team represents the congregation in this work and serves as the central organizing hub. Working closely with the minister and staff, the Justice Team seeks to mobilize the congregation for action, build strong partnerships in the community, and advocate for the causes the congregation cares deeply about.
Our focus has been on Immigration, Racial, Environmental, and Democratic Justice. Some of our actions have included: hosting film viewings, moderating panel discussions, organizing petition and letter writing to elected officials, testifying at public hearings, and assembling groups to attend rallies, marches and participate in civil disobedience. We partner with local congregations and nonprofit organizations we have worked with include Faith in New York, Extinction Rebellion, The Center for Common Ground, The Fortune Society, and Beyond Plastics.
The Environmental Justice Team is especially active, holding regular events and a monthly meeting. More information can be found here, and the team can be reached at envirojustice@4thu.org.
Our passion is “Fighting for Democracy” and we lead extensive postcard writing campaigns to disenfranchised voters in the South. Contact justice@4thu.org to get involved and more information can be found here.
Justice work at Fourth Universalist is open to all. It is deeply integrated into the heart of our community, impossible to separate from the larger work we do. Reach out to our Justice Team at justice@4thu.org. for more information or to get involved.
